How Revool and Conventional Web Design Feedback Tools are different?

Before Revool was born, there were several web design feedback tools available.

Some were easy to use without installation or user registration, assisting many web design companies and business companies' production teams.

Conventional tools can be broadly categorized into two methods based on how they acquire the pages for review.

  • A. Screen Capture Type
  • B. Scraping Type

The screen capture type is a common method in Japanese-made and Japanese-affiliated tools.

On the other hand, the scraping type is a method adopted by advanced tools made overseas.

Let's look at the characteristics of each method.

In screen capture type tools, the review target page is added based on the input URL.

It automatically takes a screenshot of the entire target web page and adds design revision instructions or feedback comments on the saved capture image.

This capture type tool has the following advantages:

  • The mechanism of the tool and comments is simple and easy to operate intuitively.
  • The screen capture of the entire page makes it easy to see where the comments are made on the page.
  • Due to the nature of static capture images, data storage and sharing are easy.

However, screen capture type tools also have the disadvantages:

  • Due to the capture of the entire screen and pre-processing, there is a long wait time for adding pages. Adding a large number of pages takes even more time.
  • Capturing each page for PC display, tablet, and mobile responsive display requires time and effort.
  • When production pages such as test uploads are updated, the original screen capture becomes outdated.

Due to the nature of treating websites as large images per page, it is suitable for commenting on a small number of pages in detail, but it may be difficult to use for design reviews of constantly updating live web pages.

In scraping type tools, similar to capture type tools, the review target page is added based on the URL entered by the user.

In scraping type tools, instead of acquiring the contents of the target page as an image, it reads the source code and displays it on the tool after preprocessing such as inserting the tool's original tags or scripts and saving related files.

Basically, it is displayed similar to the review target page, so comments can be added to the review area of the page.

This method is mainly used by advanced web revision request tools made overseas, and it is called Design Feedback Tools overseas.

Although the appearance of the reproduced page is the same as the review target page, it actually uses the processed page source once.

This scraping type tool has the following advantages:

  • The realism of the review page with content display and dynamic effects similar to the actual page.
  • Since CSS is enabled, it is easy to switch between PC, tablet, and mobile displays with one click.
  • It can review advanced web content such as web apps that require user authentication.

However, scraping type tools also have the following disadvantages:

  • Due to scraping and preprocessing of code, there is a long wait time for adding pages.
  • It may not be possible to completely reproduce elements such as layout and dynamic effects of actual pages.
  • If the review target page is updated, the original acquisition page source becomes outdated.

Since it scrapes websites, there may be concerns about the length of time it takes for unique processing of source code and problems with displaying on some websites.

Revool solves three issues of conventional web revision request tools:

  • The addition of review target pages takes time due to the unique processing of the tool, making it difficult to smoothly review a large number of pages.
  • Due to capture photography or scraping mechanisms, the acquired data becomes outdated and cannot cope with pages that continue to be updated.
  • Dynamic content such as mouse hover and scroll effects cannot be completely reproduced on the review page.

In screen capture tools, the review page is image-based, so once the page is captured, it does not move. Therefore, dynamic effects such as image sliders that swap large images on the top page, top menus that appear when menu icons are pressed, and button animations with mouse hover cannot be reproduced.

In scraping type tools, in cases such as advanced pages that load external scripts such as scripts, files, and fonts in a complex manner, the page display cannot be completely reproduced.

Furthermore, since both tools acquire and process data, adding new pages takes time.

Revool's LIVE Review Mode solving conventional issues

To solve the issues of conventional tools, Revool adopts its unique review method.

It is a LIVE review mode that directly loads the live website and captures only the screen for the parts where you want to request revisions.

With this LIVE review mode, Revool has the following features:

  • Since it directly loads the review target page, it can be reviewed as a complete page content.
  • Since there is no prior data acquisition, there is no need for page addition time, and there are no issues with outdated data acquisition.
  • Responsive display switching by viewpoint can be easily switched with one click, and pages for each device can be reviewed.
  • It allows you to freely move between multiple pages, switch views, and automatically save page URLs and views, as only the necessary revision points are captured and taskized, allowing for efficient confirmation and revision response.

With these features, Revool operates lightly as a tool, and even on websites with hundreds or more pages, it can efficiently conduct review work.

Conventional web revision request tools are easy to understand and easy to use for many users because they load entire pages and allow adding revision comments. They are convenient tools even when making numerous small revisions on a single page.

On the other hand, Revool is suitable for managing revision comments spanning multiple pages within a site while navigating between pages, and managing them by device and URL.

Use each tool's characteristics to streamline web production and app development.
